About
Research
My work sits at the intersection of French private law and contemporary legal challenges, with a particular focus on civil liability, insurance law, environmental law, and digital law.
Civil law and special contracts. I study the French law of obligations and special contracts (contrats spéciaux), with a focus on ongoing legislative reform. I co-author a biannual case law chronicle on property law (droit des biens) in the Gazette du Palais. From 2024 to 2025, I served as an expert adviser to the French Ministry of Justice on the reform of special contracts.
Insurance law. Insurance law is my primary specialization. I serve as scientific director of the JurisClasseur Responsabilité civile et Assurances encyclopedia (LexisNexis), one of the leading French legal reference works in this field. My research focuses on emerging risks — climate, pandemic, artificial intelligence, and cyber risks — and their insurability.
Environmental private law. I work on corporate due diligence obligations (devoir de vigilance) under French and European law, climate liability, and the legal status of natural commons (communs naturels).
Digital law. I research AI liability, cybersecurity, and the regulation of digital infrastructures, including through an ongoing contribution to the JurisClasseur encyclopedia on digital risks in insurance law.
Collective research
I have organized several colloquia and edited collective volumes on civil law, insurance law, and environmental private law. I am a member of two interdisciplinary research groups: one on low-tech ; the other on the insurability of coastal risks (led by Caroline Rufin-Soler).
Academic profile
Antoine Touzain is professeur agrégé de droit privé at the Université Rouen Normandie (CUREJ research unit). The title of professeur agrégé is awarded through a national competitive examination (agrégation) and corresponds to the highest rank in the French academic system, equivalent to a full professorship. He directs the Master 2 in Liability and Insurance Law (DRAD) and the law department of his university.
Contact and collaboration
I welcome invitations to colloquia, collaborative research projects, and exchanges with colleagues working on related topics. Feel free to get in touch.
